Piazza Armerina – Caltagirone

Piazza Armerina is an ancient medieval town with a fine historical Baroque and Norman center. Its tourist attraction is due to the important archaeological, historical, artistic and natural heritage. On its territory is the Roman Villa del Casale with its famous mosaics, listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1997.

About 30 km from Piazza Armerina is the town of Caltagirone, famous for the production of ceramics, an activity developed over the centuries from Magna Graecia. The Santa Maria del Monte stairway, built in 1606 to connect the ancient city to the new, is representative. It consists of one hundred and forty-two steps decorated with polychrome ceramic tiles.
